Hugo van der Kooij: EMAIL: HOAX

NEDERLANDS | ENGLISH

On a regular basis there are messages floating around that warn about a new virus. These are usually send by people that are not familiar with the subject at hand.

If you receive a virus warning please validate that the message is for real. A good virus warning message will refere you to at least one site of a known antivirus software manufacturer. If such a reference is missing you should be cautious and it is reasonable to assume the message is in fact a HOAX.

Check any viruswarning on the website of a known antivirus software manufacturer of which you will find some samples listed here:

Symantec [EN]
F-Secure [EN]
McAfee [EN]
Sophos [EN]
Trend-Micro [EN]

You can also check if the message is not a known HOAX. This could be done via the sites listed here:

Urban Legends and Folklore [EN]

Propogating these HOAX messages will harm your credibility. These message also have the same bad flooding character of a real email virus because everyone starts to send them to everyone listed in their addressbook.
